Pokémon's evolving attempt at Poké-hangout with our mons continues with new Paldean Picnics, which are very similar to Sword and Shield camping. Instead of a static first-person camera, it looks like you'll be in third-person, playing with your team to bond with them.

For some reason - no explanation - there's a chance that a Pokémon egg will show up in your picnic basket, giving you free Pokémon as long as you don't fry the eggs, you monster. Is this a Pokémon that especially likes to spawn in a basket, or any old Pokémon? We'll have to wait to find out.

You can also customize your picnic a little by changing the tablecloth! Very important.

But the best part of the picnic is of course the food, and ScaVi replaced Sword Shield's curry with Paldea's sandwiches. It looks like you can buy sandwich ingredients like lettuce, tomatoes and ham (presumably from Lechonk) in town and make a sandwich with those ingredients in ten minutes (really long if you ask us) .

It also looks like the sandwich has real physics, which means the hardest part is balancing the ingredients and bread without letting it all fall apart. We can see some fun physics-related antics going on here...and some pretty nasty sandwiches.

The composition of the sandwich determines how good it is, and what buffs you get from it - higher experience points, better catch rates for certain types, help in raid combat are all possible, and more we haven't seen yet. Love good sandwiches.

New Pokédex UI
Pokédex seems to take its design inspiration from Apple Books, and Pokémon looks more like a book on a shelf than an entry in an encyclopedia. Each Pokémon will have its own photo, plus the usual pictorial information, including height, weight, animation, and more. It's prettier, but maybe less accessible?

Girafarig's evo Farigiraf introduces two new abilities to the game:

Chew Cud: Allows Pokémon to eat berries twice in two turns
Armor Tail: Prevents opposing Pokémon from using priority actions
Armor Tail in particular could be a game-changer for competitive gaming, but we'd love to see if players can do anything cool with Chew Cud as well.

Character customization

The Pokémon game continues to increase the amount of character customization players can do, with hairstyles and hair color returning, as well as eye shape, lash and eyebrow styles, beauty marks, freckles, colored touches, lip shapes, and makeup options.

As a bonus, it looks like all of these options are no longer locked to a specific gender. Not only does this mean you can create a neutral character if you want, but it also means a gender fluid character that can easily switch between a more feminine and masculine look!

We know about the camera app, but we get a better look at its capabilities in this trailer. It looks like you can take selfies and photos of people and Pokémon, as well as landscapes and other interesting phenomena. You can use a variety of filters, poses and expressions for your character, and eye-related stuff - we guess it's a "look here!" command like Animal Crossing: New Horizons.

If you take a photo you like, you can use it as your character's profile card background. We're also curious if you can use a photo of a Pokémon as their pictorial material, like in Breath of the Wild.

We love TM machines. In addition to finding TMs scattered around the world or buying them in stores, TMs can now be crafted at the Pokémon Center. Using Alliance Points and Pokémon materials, you can craft anything you have a recipe for - however, how we get those recipes is still unknown.

But wait, are you talking about league points? What are league points? We're assuming for now that they're earned through gym fights, but that's not much of a case, so maybe they're earned through regular trainer fights as well. In the latest revamp of the Pokémon anime, Ash and friends monitor and update their league rank via the Rotom Drone every time they fight someone else in the Pokémon League (even a random trainer), so we're guessing something like of.

Pokémon will now drop materials
You may have noticed that the crafting material for TMs is Pokémon Shards. do not worry! These are just shards that fell from passed out Pokémon, right? Like Snom threads. We don't know which part of the Snom is the thread, but it doesn't sound like a body part! And Shinx Fang, um... well, that sounds like a body part. Maybe you just hit a Shinx so hard that its teeth fell off. don’t worry.

Live HUD
The heads-up display (terms for on-screen interfaces like maps and health bars) has been redesigned to limit your field of view as little as possible when you're in the field. Now, instead of appearing in a separate full-screen menu, your Pokémon team appears as a translucent sidebar, allowing you to continue whatever you're doing while checking the status of your Pokémon.

The minimap looks like it will provide a lot of useful information - nearby wild Pokémon, pins you can set yourself, and the location of useful places like Pokémon Centers.

You can open a menu in this field that gives you access to several options:

Mystery Gift
Previously, many of these things were only accessible from specific locations (like Raid Battles) or the start menu (like Mystery Gifts). Now you can access all of these features wherever you are!

Offline transactions?
We'd like to be skeptical, as the game is still in development, but in our opinion, the game allows you to do link trades in offline mode. But yes, it's probably just because the server isn't up yet.

Tera Pokémon have a type that might not be anything to do with their basic types
Terastallizing might be available from the start — we see an unevolved Quaxly using it
Tera Pokémon can be found in the wild — they sparkle
Catching a wild Tera Pokémon is a matter of getting its HP low, at which point it will turn back into its basic form
There are rare Tera types, which can be found in raid battles
There's a new move called Tera Blast, which changes its type to whatever the Tera-type is of the Pokémon using it
Sudowoodo finally gets to be a grass type! There are Cheap Shiny Pokemon for sale.
